ORACs
- You Need to Know About Them!
Animals know about them. Bees know
about them. Insects know about them. It's time we
learn about them. One of the great designs of God
was to place richly colored pigments throughout the
plant kingdom. It is the rich colors of various plants
that animals and insects use both for their own nutrition
and for the pollination of various plants.
We have discussed some of these
pigments in relation to our eyes and macular degeneration.
In reality, well over 2,000 different pigments are
present in various plants that we consume. The health
benefits of these substances are just now being understood.
Many of these pigments are familiar to us, including
beta-carotene, which gives carrots their orange color.
But beta-carotene is only one of about 450 known carotenoids.
Other chemical compounds, known
as flavonoids, include the pigments found in blueberries,
raspberries, strawberries, grapes, and many, many
other foods. These colored chemical compounds have
an incredible capacity to fight disease and protect
our bodies from potential harm. Some contain powerful
antioxidants that fight the free radicals that trigger
cancer, diabetes, and have roles in diseases such
as Alzheimer's and heart disease.
