The
World's Best Cereal
Most people would not
argue about the value of cereal. Certain types of
cereals are associated with incredible health benefits-obviously
not the sugarcoated Super Smacks, however. According
to a study done in 1999, high dietary fiber intake
typically found in cereal actually reduces cardiovascular
and heart disease, insulin levels, and even prevents
weight gain.
Isn't it ironic that
a carbohydrate prevents weight gain? Cereal is a specific
form of carbohydrate known as a complex carbohydrate.
Increasing fiber intake from cereal can lower insulin
levels and protect us against diabetes as well as
obesity.
In fact, a study of
almost 3,000 adults showed that across the board,
the higher the dietary fiber intake, the lower the
coronary heart disease risk factors. Blood pressure,
triglyceride levels, and obesity were lower. Good
or protective HDL levels were higher. Actually, the
amount of fiber in the diet (or lack thereof) was
more predictive of heart disease risk factors than
was fat intake. The higher the fiber intake, the lower
the rate of heart attacks!
