Black
Cohosh Stops Menopause Symptoms
Scientists are not exactly sure how it works,
but one thing they do know: it does work! Native Americans
have used black cohosh for centuries to relieve symptoms of
menopause, and it apparently works because of its natural
estrogen-like effects. It has been used for several decades
in Europe and remains extremely popular. Black cohosh is an
herb derived from the roots of a low-growing forest plant
and contains numerous compounds that seem to bind with estrogen
receptors (which could indicate a possible protective effect
against breast cancer).
At a recent conference on alternative and
complimentary medicine at the University of Chicago, Dr. Victoria
Rand, of the University of California, San Francisco, presented
evidence from numerous studies that have consistently demonstrated
the effectiveness of black cohosh in eliminating menopausal
symptoms such as hot flashes and sweats in a majority of menopausal
patients. Black cohosh also has been shown to relieve symptoms
of premenstrual syndrome as well as menstrual cramps, depression,
and vaginal atrophy. In a head-to-head test with .625 mg.
of Premarin (the most common prescription estrogen), black
cohosh came out ahead in relieving menopausal symptoms.
